We all have ideal uses for our backyard; it's often where we host parties or spend precious "me time,” recharging from work through lounging by the pool. There are a lot of uses for the backyard on multiple levels. However, this versatility can also be counterproductive, because it will eventually lead to your backyard having clear signs of wear and tear.

A great way to improve your backyard's state and revitalize it is through using a pressure washer. Sometimes referred to as power washing, it can make a huge difference in your yard’s cleanliness and aesthetics. Practically all the surfaces of your backyard will look downright refreshed by pressure washing services. However, there are certain things to consider:

  • Cleaning solution (soap, water, or both)
  • Pressure washer type
  • Technique

Read on to learn tips on pressure washing your backyard to give it new life:

Make Sure Loose Bricks Are Fixed Beforehand

Older brick will end up softer and somewhat looser as time goes by, leaving it prone to pressure washing damage. If your backyard doesn't seem to have any loose bricks, run a thorough check in case you find any. They need to be fixed before any power washing services are done. If it's not possible for repairs to be done at the time, try switching up the cleaning method to be less intensive.

For Cleaning Brick, Concrete Hardscapes, and Pavers

  • Algae or mold is best addressed through water alone. Oil stains and similar stubborn concerns will need to be dealt with by way of a soap attachment.

  • Large hardscape areas will benefit from a sweeping attachment to move things along well.

  • Make sure the tip is held around 12 inches from the hardscape surface, sweeping evenly from one end to the other. Prevent surface damage by keeping the spray at an angle.

  • Use a pressure washer with 3,000 PSI (pounds per square inch) and three gallons per minute (GPM). Avoid feature surface damage by using a tip with the widest angle.

For Wooden Fences

As time passes, there is a tendency for wooden fences to look faded and seem quite dull. Look into adding a fresh coat of paint, sealant, or stain after it's pressure washed. Ideally, this should be done at least two days (48 hours) after so that no remaining water gets sealed with it.

  • Areas that are particularly tricky to get clean will benefit from the use of a rotating scrub brush.

  • Avoid streaking by applying detergent from the bottom moving towards the top. Let it sit for 10 minutes at most, keeping the fence wet.

  • Make sure the soap doesn't dry out.

  • Make sure to work in sections and keep the fence wet.

  • Use moderate pressure only, with a "fin" pattern.

Conclusion

A great way to revitalize a backyard is by giving it a good clean with a pressure washer. Sometimes also referred to as power washing, it can make almost all surfaces refreshed. Make sure loose bricks are fixed beforehand, then clean brick, concrete hardscapes, and pavers. Wooden fences will also benefit as well.
